Do you ever feel that you're not meeting all your children's reading needs? Many children do not respond to common reading strategies, and many have fallen behind due to Covid. I mentioned that our brains are pattern-making machines, but research shows that about 20% of our students do not figure out a significant number of patterns in the language on their own. This is where phonological awareness and direct, explicit, systematic phonics instruction come in.

  • Phonological awareness is the awareness of sounds in the language. It turns out that skilled readers primarily use the AUDITORY--not the visual--part of their brains, when reading. We can help children develop auditory skills through simple daily activities.

  • Phonics is the awareness of language patterns in PRINT. Studies show that direct, explicit, systematic phonics instruction is the best way to help struggling students--We should directly explain language patterns in a systematic way. Through simple daily activities, we can teach children the patterns they need to succeed.

  • Structured Inquiry is a way to harness student voice in a structured way. If 20% of students struggle to find patterns, how do we meet the needs of the other 80% who ARE finding patterns on their own? How do we get the 20% to LEARN to find patterns in the language? You will learn to use student voice through a structured inquiry process  and specially-designed songs to ACCELERATE LEARNING in this class.

Here, again, is a visual of the "brain on music."
Picture

Here is a more detailed image explaining how music supports brain function. You can see that if used correctly, there is EVERY reason that music can be TRANSFORMATIVE in your classroom!
Picture

As you recall from the presentation, MORE of the brain is involved in learning through music. Through specially designed songs and a structured inquiry process, you can accelerate the learning process--and your students will have MORE FUN learning.

Welcome to "Early Reading Success." This simple, highly organized course provides parents and teachers with the "keys" to successful reading--along with tons of materials to begin using right away. Lower your stress level knowing you'll have the tools to make teaching your children fun, easy, and effective.

  • In Module 1, you'll learn all about phonological awareness--the awareness of sounds in the language. It turns out that skilled readers primarily use the auditory areas of the brain, so it makes sense that focusing on sounds helps to support students as they develop as readers.
  • In Module, 2, you'll learn about basic letters and sounds, as well as teaching children to read CVC words.
  • In Module 3, you'll learn to incorporate intermediate phonics skills into your program.
  • Finally, Module 4 focuses on advanced spelling patterns.
  • Throughout this program, you'll learn to use MUSIC to ACCELERATE learning.
  • You'll also learn to incorporate STUDENT VOICE using the Structured Inquiry Lesson Planning Framework™.

What Your Colleagues Have Said About "Early Reading Success"

"This year has been quite difficult for me and my students because of distance learning. Using the songs we have learned in this course during online instruction has enhanced my teaching and also made learning fun for the students. Prior to this course, I was doing (another phonics-based program), but it was becoming mundane and my students were losing interest. Once I began adding the songs from this course to my instruction my students' attitudes changed and they were totally engaged. My students would often ask for many songs to be replayed because they loved to sing along and read the words/sounds. I am happy to see the progress my students have made in their reading skills due to this course."

-Joleen Ko, First Grade Teacher

"I found this course to be extremely insightful and has helped me to understand the stages young children go through when learning how to read. I was able to apply various strategies into my classroom routine and assist the struggling readers in my class to make steady progress ... I have found incorporating music videos to teach foundational concepts is extremely helpful. I found that my struggling readers were able to catch on a lot quicker and easier when there was a song they could remember. Iʻm excited to continue implementing these strategies and videos as I continue to teach my Kindergarteners how to read."

-Kristi Okura, Kindergarten Teacher

"Before the course, I believed that my implementation of phonics strategies was good. After taking this course, I have a stronger and better understanding of phonics ... I now have tools to not only teach my struggling students, but also my average and advanced students ... This course has made me a stronger teacher. I will continue to use the music videos and the knowledge and teaching skills I learned so that my students can have greater success in reading and writing."

-Julia Salvido, First Grade Teacher

"I would recommend this course to anyone who teaches English at an elementary school level. The videos, strategies and activities are age appropriate and engaging. This course has benefited me as a professional by allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of the basic concepts of phonics and phonological awareness."

-Grace Chang, Fully self contained pre-k classroom

"It was very rewarding to see the excitement in the students when they watched the videos and participated in the activities...I was amazed to see that in implementing just several of the strategies learned in this course I was able to see student growth... I am eager to continue to utilize these resources in the future to assist students in learning how to read. I have improved as a professional and in my ability to effectively teach reading to my students."

- Erin Drayer, First Grade Teacher

"I’ve gained so many great strategies, songs, activities, and understandings of the importance of building phonological awareness in teaching children to read. I look forward to incorporating all the strategies I’ve learned and have gained confidence in my ability to teach phonics to my students. I will be sure to incorporate music in my classroom in all different ways and in the different subject areas as it's such an easy and useful strategy in teaching young children. I also plan to work on incorporating my student’s input into rubrics on activities as some students will take it seriously and will work to learn the phonics strategies. Finally, I send a big thank you to Jenny for developing and sharing her knowledge of teaching phonics and her educational songs with me as it makes me a more effective teacher."

-Cheri Masumoto, Kindergarten Teacher

"My big takeaway from this course is that I now have all the resources and knowledge of how to teach my children and my struggling readers. I know this course was mainly for lower grades but my students can benefit from these resources too. I will be able to incorporate many of these videos and use the Structured Inquiry Framework. I will be using the “Past Tense Tricks”, “ Plurals, Plurals, Plurals, Plurals”, “Prefix/suffix” “7 kinds of Syllables”, and “Dividing Syllables” to name a few."

Corrina Yonemori, 5th Grade Teacher

"At the beginning of this course, I strictly followed (my school's) curriculum. However, this course has given me the tools to supplement when needed and I've learned how important it is to focus the phonics skills to grow and become proficient as readers and writers. My students are enjoying learning the skills through song and are reciting and singing the rules when they are independently reading and writing. It is great to see them able to apply those when reading books. I have grown as an educator by intentionally putting into practice the strategies I learned in this course. I look forward to getting stronger and integrating more songs and phonics strategies across my curriculum."

-Mia Molinaro, K-1 Teacher

"I can’t help but wish I would have had this knowledge 6 years ago when I started my kindergarten inclusion year. I’ve had anywhere from 1 to 6 students in my class at a time with IEP’s and need of specially designed instruction. The teaching strategies and resources provided in this course will be ones that I will continue to use and incorporate into my lessons regularly. I think that other teachers will find this useful as well. I plan to recommend this course to my colleagues in hopes of encouraging them to build the foundations in reading...I am trained in (another program) to teach struggling readers to read. I will continue to use (those) strategies but will also incorporate these videos into my teaching practice. My students have much more fun and seem more motivated when they are presented with a video that they can sing and move along to while learning."

-Jen Burger, K-1 Special Education Inclusion Teacher

Comments About the Structured Inquiry Lesson Planning Framework™

"In addition to having the videos and songs as a resource, I now know how to plan and implement them with purpose and intention using the Structured Inquiry Lesson Planning Framework.  The use of the inquiry and discussion topics during my phonics lessons is not something I had considered previously, but is so powerful to student understanding and engagement, and simple to implement ... The positive impact on student growth during this past quarter has been so encouraging. Through my first attempts at implementing portions of the Structured Inquiry lesson plans, my students have been more engaged, more willing to speak and discuss, and are showing greater growth!  The two small groups of students I focused on when implementing my full lesson plans showed great academic growth in letter sounds and “magic e” words, as evidenced in their post-assessment conferences.  I believe the student growth outcomes would not have been nearly as significant without these targeted lesson plans and resources I gained from this course.  I will continue to use what I have learned in my phonological awareness and phonics routines, as I know that they are data-driven and considered best practices.  I have seen first hand the positive impacts they have on student learning, and am grateful for this professional development experience."

-Kayleen Pieper, Kindergarten Teacher

"I would like to emphasize the impact the structured inquiry lesson planning framework has had on my teaching and students’ learning. I had become so used to lessons needing to have an opening, step-by-step plan for instruction, and a closing and the required detail of which I found to be quite restrictive and discouraging when a lesson didn’t go as planned. The framework has become a very integral part of my planning for all subject areas. My favorite part of the framework is definitely the first inquire stage. This has made learning much more student-centered and student-directed and the result of that is a fully-engaged and motivated class. Even informally, I find myself often asking students what they notice when we read a story for fun at the end of the day, or when we go to our weekly P.E. class and different supplies have been set up for a new skill/game. I find myself learning a lot more about and from my students."

-Megan Iwanaga, Kindergarten teacher

More Comments About Using MUSIC to Accelerate Learning

"I never knew what impact songs would have on my students’ learning. I thought I was already teaching with a multimodal approach until I realized how much more I could be doing. I have seen the impact using songs to help teach concepts has on my students. I think since they are in Kindergarten and really love to sing and dance they do not even realize they are learning at the same time ... With Jenny’s songs and the resources she provided I was able to enhance my lessons and the students not only had more fun learning but their application of skills and knowledge was much better."

-Sarah Iorillo, K-1 Teacher

"I have used music and videos prior to this course, but never to the depth of how I am able to use them now ... My students always ask to listen to ABC Fun! Or to try a new song to see what it’s about. Many of the early reading and phonics time videos have become part of a regular playlist in our class that we use in the morning as a warm up to get our day started, the beginning of phonics instruction time, and at the end of our day. The students sing the lyrics to some songs with so much confidence and will repeat the chorus of some songs sometimes to help remember skills (like 'All rhymes end with the same sound')."

-Megan Iwanaga, Kindergarten teacher

"After taking this course, I have added SO many new strategies to my teacher toolbox.  The most powerful and exciting thing I have gained from this course is the integration of songs and videos in a purposeful way to my phonological awareness and phonics lessons ... Prior to taking this course, I used ... videos ... as “space fillers” when we had a few minutes before a transition period. After completing this course, I am comfortable navigating the Edutunes video library, and am still amazed at what an amazing resource it is to use with my students.  The videos are such a fun and easy way to introduce early, intermediate, and advanced phonics topics.  I am especially excited about the intermediate and advanced phonics topics, as I have had students in the past that were certainly ready to dive into more accelerated phonics topics, but I did not have the knowledge or resources to introduce them."

-Kayleen Pieper, Kindergarten Teacher

Early Reading Success: Phonological Awareness and Phonics Strategies to Accelerate Learning + MUSIC BUNDLE (Early Phonics + Phonics Time + Advanced Phonics)

$316.00 $112.49

Welcome to "Early Reading Success!" This self-guided, online, Science of Reading-based course gives you the tools you need to teach your children to read. The four modules teach principles of phonological awareness, followed by early, intermediate, and advanced phonics teaching strategies. You'll also get the COMPLETE Early Phonics, Phonics Time, and Advanced Phonics sets, including over 100 commercial-free, systematic music videos.

You will learn:

  • Fundamentals of the Science of Reading, phonological awareness, and phonics instruction
  • Research-supported multisensory strategies to accelerate learning.
  • How to use songs and other strategies to effectively introduce, teach, and review concepts
  • Strategies for creating student-generated rubrics and assessments
  • Ways to make teaching more efficient and effective through a structured inquiry process
  • Ways to teach the reading in a way that fosters a positive, motivational classroom atmosphere.

Why is the course focusing on phonological awareness and phonics? Studies indicate that if students don’t read proficiently by the end of third grade, they statistically are more likely to experience continued academic difficulties, may not graduate on time from high school, and are more likely to have economic hardships later in life (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2013). The landmark government-sponsored National Reading Panel report (2000) recommended explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics as the most effective strategy to help our struggling readers--and benefits ALL readers.

It's my mission as a teacher, and with EduTunes, to make a difference--so I will do anything I can to help promote success for your students. I'll also work hard to help YOU to succeed in this course--so you will be able to connect with me anytime you need support through our private Facebook group.

*** Once you purchase the course, I will contact you with course details and login credentials.
