Module 2: Early Phonics
Guidance for Blog Reflections

  • Please write one blog post for each module. Keep in mind the DOE's requirements for thoughtful reflections that show how your teaching is transforming through this course. Use DOK levels 1-2 to explain your understandings, and DOK levels 3-4 insights to show strategic and extended thinking.
  • Also, respond to one blog post per module. Responses should include reflections on all parts of a colleague's reflection. How does your coworker's insights help you to improve as a professional? Again, use DOK levels 1-2 to explain your understandings, and DOK levels 3-4 insights to show strategic and extended thinking.
  • Remember to grade your blog post and response using the class rubric.

Please explain your understanding of early phonics concepts, and how you will incorporate your new understanding into your teaching practice. What early phonics strategies have you used in the past? What did you learn from the section? What strategies (including titles of songs from the "Early Phonics" and "Phonics Time" sections, the Structured Inquiry Framework, and early phonics activities) have you tried in your classroom? Include sample stories of students who struggled or experienced success, along with data. (Please don't include real names.) Explain why you believe you are seeing these results. What have you done that is working? What additional steps can you take to promote greater student success?

***Write one blog post and include a very detailed response to one other post.

Thanks,
Jennifer

***Here is a sample. It's a mixture of a template and ideas:

After studying this section, I learned several new things about early phonics concepts:

First, ___. I can incorporate this into my classroom by ___. Another idea I have is ___. One concern I have is ___. I will try ___.

Second, ___. I can incorporate this into my classroom by ___. Another idea I have is ___. One concern I have is ___. I will try ___.

Third, ___. I can incorporate this into my classroom by ___. Another idea I have is ___. One concern I have is ___. I will try ___.

I think that if I ____, I will be more successful in my classroom. This section was helpful because ___.

After using some ideas in summer school or after school starts, you could add more. Do this in your portfolio if you have already uploaded a blog post. Here is an example of the type of thing you could say:

I've tried some new things in my classroom based on this course. We did a "cold reading" of the first phonics reader. I took notes as students read. Then, the students sang ___ . Next, we did a phonemic awareness activity: I gave children sounds in a word, and they blended it to tell me the word. We did this for about 10 words from the book. After that, we used letter cards, followed by word reading cards, followed by a second reading. I found that a student who read with 50% accuracy now read with 76% accuracy. I know that I need to give that child more support since 95% accuracy indicates an independent reading level. Another student went from reading with 92% accuracy to 97% accuracy. This child is ready to move on to book 2.

I think I'm seeing good results because we practiced with songs, phonemic awareness activities, letters, and words. I think I could see better results if we continue practicing in this way. I try to think of each child's responses as formative assessments. Some children are ready to move on, while others need more practice.

Grade: I give my blog post a 3 because I shared what I learned, told about what I've done in the past, explained strategies I used in my classroom with specific examples including data, explained what was working, and considered additional steps to take to promote greater student success.

***Here is a sample response template:

Hi, ___.

The ___ section helped me understand ___ better too. In my classroom, I ___.

I noticed that you were confused by ___. One thing the course recommends is ___. From my experience, you could also try ___. Another idea I have is ___. Maybe this would help your children even more.

It sounds like some of your students are struggling with ___. What if you try ___?

Grade: I give my blog response a 3 because I responded to each section with specific ideas that can help ___ to improve as a professional.
